DURHAM, N.C.—Alarming reports have been pouring in for over a year now that there are things currently happening in the Middle East. More specifically, many, many people are dying. This is a monumental tragedy no matter what perspective one holds. Loss of life on this scale is never, never good, and we hope for a quick and sustainable resolution to what is happening.
Unfortunately, because we are college students applying for internships and full-time jobs, that seems to be about the extent of what we can say on this, officially. Pretty much, it’s getting really bad over there, and we really hope it gets less bad, soon.
Especially now amidst a presidential election, college students are encouraged to do more research on the issues that affect today’s political climate. The best way to do this is by reading from a variety of credible journalistic sources. Please, please, please pick any other source.
But why look to us when other “journalists” are doing a much better job? Every now and then the Chronicle mentions something about Hamas or Israel. When they’re feeling extra bold, they even occasionally publish opinion pieces written by other students, so long as they aren’t affiliated with the Chronicle in any discernible way. This seems to be working out great, as many members of the Chronicle are on track to one day have internships or full-time jobs.
Importantly, this is not to say there isn’t stuff happening in the Middle East, especially around the Israel and Palestine areas. There is definitely stuff happening, and a lot of it. Most of it has been very bad, and we strongly encourage you to read more coverage. Elsewhere, ideally.
We would really love to say more about the hypocrisy of what is often touted as the, “only democracy in the Middle East” indiscriminately bombing hospitals and killing a murky mix of civilians, peacekeeping volunteers, and actual combatants. Unfortunately, not only do we yearn for employment, the college we attend also happens to be Duke University. Thus, we have gotten the vibe that such reporting could lead to a lot of very angry text messages and potentially IRL confrontations. Leaning toward sitting this one out.
