DURHAM, NC—In response to growing anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment and action within the right-leaning organization The Ciceronian Society, the Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity (CSGD) has established a new student organization for queer conservatives: The Sisteronian Societea.
Since 2021, Duke’s so-called “free speakers” have had one option to voice their opinions on the current state of political affairs in the United States of America and abroad: The Ciceronian Society. As the rhetoric has shifted over the past three years, though, the members of the LGBTQ+ community have felt especially marginalized in the GBMs and discussions.
In a recent meeting, Liz Tran (T’26) was singled out for wearing a shirt that read “Go Pride”. While the shirt was in support of her high school, she was berated for the choice and exiled to the back of the room to ensure her presence wouldn’t mar any of the group photos. Two weeks ago, Gabe St. Friend (T’25) was speaking on women’s reproductive rights. Unfortunately for St. Friend, the tone in which he said “period” prompted the co-presidents to interrupt his tirade on peeling back access to menstrual products on campus and demand that he exit the room or be bombarded with the catered Chick-fil-a nuggets.
In response to these two incidents, the CSGD established The Sisteronian Society. “The Sisterhood is built on principles of inclusion and acceptance,” said club president Chase Morgan (T’25), “there is only one type of hatred accepted in this space, and that is the hatred of liberals.”
The Sisteronian Societea’s “LGBMs” will be similarly catered by Chick-fil-a; however, the club differentiates itself by providing Earl Grey tea for the occasion, with the option to add oat milk. For any interested individuals, the club will meet bi-weekly.
